YELLOW FEVER VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS FOR TANZANIA

Yellow Fever vaccination requirements vary by country, as outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO). Travelers from countries not considered Yellow Fever risk areas such as most parts of Europe, the United States, and certain regions of Asia—are generally not required to present a vaccination certificate when entering Tanzania.

Although Tanzania is not classified as a Yellow Fever endemic country, mosquitoes capable of transmitting the virus are present. This means there is a potential risk if the virus is introduced into the country.

Transit Through Yellow Fever Endemic Countries

Travelers from non-endemic countries who pass through Yellow Fever endemic areas are not required to present a vaccination certificate, provided they remain within the airport transit area and do not stay for more than 12 hours.

Entry Requirements from Endemic Countries

Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory for travelers arriving from countries where Yellow Fever is endemic. Such travelers must present a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate upon arrival in Tanzania.

Failure to present a valid certificate may result in refusal of entry. In some cases, travelers may be vaccinated upon arrival and placed under public health observation for up to 10 days.

When to Get Vaccinated

The Yellow Fever vaccine is administered as a single dose and should be taken at least 10 days before travel to ensure full protection. A single dose is generally considered to provide lifelong immunity.

Individuals who are exempt due to medical conditions or age (under 1 year or over 60 years) should seek medical advice if they experience symptoms such as fever, headache, or muscle and joint pain.

Travel Between Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar

Travelers moving between mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar are not required to present a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate, as both regions are part of the United Republic of Tanzania. This applies whether traveling from mainland Tanzania to Zanzibar or vice versa.
