TANZANIA WEATHER

Tanzania Weather and Regional Climate Guide

Before traveling to Tanzania, it is important to understand the country’s weather patterns and regional climate differences. This helps visitors plan their trips effectively and make the most of their safari experience.

Tanzania has a tropical climate with temperatures generally ranging between 22°C and 31°C throughout the year. The country experiences two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season.

Dry Season (June to October)

The dry season runs from June to October and is considered the peak tourist period. During this time, the weather is mostly clear, sunny, and pleasant. These conditions create excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and outdoor activities, making it the most popular season for safaris.

Wet Season (November to May)

The wet season extends from November to May and includes both the short and long rains. Although this period receives more rainfall and fewer tourists visit, it is ideal for photography due to the lush green landscapes. Rain usually comes in short bursts or occasional longer showers, but it rarely disrupts travel activities for long.

Regional Climate Variations

Northern Parks:
Northern safari destinations such as Serengeti and Tarangire experience a moderate climate. Rainfall is highest around April but is generally lighter compared to Arusha. The Ngorongoro Crater rim, located at about 2,300 meters (7,545 feet) above sea level, can be cold in the early mornings and evenings due to its high altitude.

Arusha City:
Arusha serves as a major gateway to northern safari circuits. Surrounded by the scenic Mount Meru, the city enjoys pleasant weather and offers a comfortable stop for travelers before or after their safari adventures.

Southern Circuit Parks:
Parks in the southern circuit, including Nyerere (Selous), Mikumi, Ruaha, Gombe, Mahale Mountains, and Katavi, generally experience warmer temperatures than northern parks due to their lower altitudes.
